"Mightiest Conifer in Europe" (multi-stemmed Silver Fir) |
The 25 acres which comprise Ardkinglas
Woodland Garden are situated towards the north
end of Loch Fyne, near the village of Cairndow. Ardkinglas
provides a unique growing environment, where location,
climate and soil combine to create optimal conditions.
Following on from planting in the 18th Century, the
mature conifer collection for which the garden is
renowned was established around 1875. The Victorian
legacy ensures that presently Ardkinglas boasts many
Champion Trees (the tallest or broadest of their species
within the British Isles).
An arboretum was established in the 1960s and the
woodland garden was reclaimed in the 1990s. Ardkinglas
is also home to planting by the Conifer Conservation
Project run by the Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh.
The remarkable collection of trees at Ardkinglas holds
the national collection of Abies and Picea as designated
by the National Council for the Conservation of Plants
& Gardens.

Ardkinglas holds one of the finest
collections of rhododendrons and conifers within the
British Isles. Located amongst an impressive display
of mature rhododendrons, which flower from March to
mid-June, are many Champion Trees, including a Grand
Fir (Abies grandis) which towers above you. This tree
was measured at 203 feet in 2002 and is one of the
tallest trees in Britain.
Ardkinglas is a garden that can be enjoyed by everyone,
from the plant enthusiast to those wanting a peaceful
woodland walk ... it is truly a garden to discover!
